  1. Green Zebra, Chicago

I had a really disappointing experience at Green Zebra last night.

At Green Zebra, you apparently don’t know what’s on the tasting menu until it shows up in front of you.The first course was tempura fried green tomatoes. I really don’t like anything fried because I don’t like the smell or the taste of the cooking method, so I tried a little bit and left the rest on my plate. The server went on to just take away my plate without offering something else. So I asked him if there was anything else in the tasting that would be fried- he laughed and said no. The other three courses ended up okay. I mean they weren’t good.. too sugary (ie. candied pistachios, brandied sour cherries, crepes). Then we got our dessert course.. a fried funnel cake. The waiter came over and proceeded to smugly describe the course. I reminded him that he had promised that there wouldn’t be another fried course and he asked another server to take it away. Frustrated, I said, “You can leave it. I don’t like dessert anyway.” He said, “Hey at least you can drink the blackberry float that’s on the side.”

So thats two out of 5 courses that I didn’t touch, but still paid for.

I had been drinking a glass of champagne with dinner. Our server came over a few minutes later and put down a glass of what looked like another glass of champagne. He apologized and said that he felt bad, and that this glass was on the house… a nice gesture, right? I take a sip.. and no its not another glass of the nice Brut I was drinking. Its a freaking disgusting Italian Moscato.

The first experience I had at Green Zebra was awesome. This time nothing went right.

The server also pronounced ‘Italian’ ‘Eye-tal-ian’.. classy.
